Jim Clark was Scotland’s first, and double, Formula One World Champion, Indy 500 winner, and one of the greatest racing drivers of all time.
Clark was born in Kilmany in Fife but grew up in the Scottish Borders.
He was a British sports car champion in 1959, took third place at the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1960, and was British saloon car champion in 64.
Also, Formula One World Champion in 1963 and 1965 before his death in a crash at Hockenheim, he was 32. In one fatal moment 50 years ago, on 7 April 1968, a sporting legend was gone.
“The world mourns the loss of a likable man who was also one of the greatest Grand Prix drivers of all time,” said the British Pathe news announcer at the time.
